Seven in 10 (70%) engineers do not receive workplace perks, according to research by online job site CV Library.

The survey of 1,200 UK professionals also found that, although 56% of engineers want flexible working opportunities, only 40% are currently offered them. Comparatively, 60% of employees in the engineering sector have access to staff discounts, but just 24% actually value this benefit. As many as four-fifths (80%) of engineers believe that workplace perks are important.

Lee Biggins (pictured), founder and chief executive officer at CV Library, said: “It’s an alarming statistic to find that [more than] two-thirds of engineering professionals don’t receive workplace perks. Extra benefits are an important part of a job offer and certainly contribute to [employees’] enjoyment in a role.”

Benefits that engineering professionals want access to include free food (27%) and a day off for their birthday (23%).

In terms of existing work perks, 45% of engineers can utilise employer-provided devices and mobiles, 35% enjoy free food and 30% are offered the chance to attend social events.

Biggins added: “In 2019, we know that pay isn’t the be all and end all. When it comes to negotiating a job offer and the package falls short of [employees’ expectations], note that there may be some wiggle room on the workplace perks.”
